YOUNG
The Young Family also has extensive roots in Ward 4, Pointe Coupee, Louisiana and became connected to the Coates and the Harris families through marriage. The Young family probably worked on the Young plantation, because a Young plantation is listed as being in Pointe Coupee Parish. According to the 1870 Census in Ward 4, Sam Young is listed as being 24y/o (1846), his birth place is Mississippi, and his father’s name is listed as “Sam” and his mother’s maiden name is listed as “Miller.” He is married to Elizabeth who is 21y/o (1849), her maiden name is Taylor, and her birth place is Louisiana. They have two children Henry 2y/o (1868) and Philip 1y/o (1869). Sam and Elizabeth other children are James (Known as Papa Jean), Albert, William, Lizzie, Katherine, and Rachael. Family legend says that Elizabeth died as a fairly young woman and the older daughter, Rachael, reared the younger children such as Albert and probably William. Rachel married a man by the name of Bouman. She reared her brother along with her sons, Joseph and Sample. Albert would tell his children for a long time he thought Joseph and Sample were his brothers and learned much later they were his nephews. The above birth date for Sam Young may not be accurate because in the 1900 Census his birth date is listed as 2/1834 and he is 66y/o a widower, his father’s name is Sam, and his birth place is Virginia, and his mother’s birth place is Virginia. He has his birth place as Louisiana. His son, Albert Young 11/1885, is 15y/o and living as a boarder with Mack Young. It would be much later he learned they were his nephews. There is no record of Sam serving in the Civil War. According to the 1920 Census, Sam worked as a farm laborer, he lived a long life, and died at 3/1/1925 at 91y/o in Pointe Coupee Parish.
