HARRIS
According to the 1880 Census the Harris Family lived in Ward 4 of Brownview, and consisted of Jeff Harris, age 55 (birth 1825) was born in Louisiana, his wife was Mary Harris, age 45, (birth 1825) and was born in Virginia. His occupation is listed as laborer. He had three children, Mary age 14, Walker age 12, and Nancy age 8. Jeff Harris’ parents birth places are listed as Louisiana, but Mary’s parents and siblings’ birth are listed as Virginia.
The Harris and Coates families became related when Walker Harris married the daughter of Stephen and Angeline Coates, Mary at the age of 17 in 1900. He knew he was getting a good woman since she had the same name as his mother. According to the 1900 Census, Walker Harris and Mary Harris were living in “Police Jury Ward 4 Pointe Coupee, LA, he was head of household, his father was deceased and his mother was 60y/o, with three living children, she lost three children and gave birth to six children. According to the 1920 Census, Walker and Mary Harris continued to live in Ward 4 but their family had greatly multiplied. By this time Walker and Mary had 11 children, Jeff 19y/o, Peter 17y/0, Sarah 15y/o, Letha 13y/o, Joseph11y/o, Mary 9y/o, Cornelius 7y/o , Mchnan 5y/o, William, 3y/o Grant 2y/o, and Angie 6/12. When Stephen Coates could no longer deliver the mail he gave the postman job to his son-in-law, Walker. They both delivered the mail on horseback. The last child, Mercy was born in 1925, and Mary Walker died shortly after her birth. In the 1930 Census, Mercy is listed as being 5y/o, and her sister, Letha Farlow, is listed as 24y/o living in the household, Sarah had left home. It is said she moved to New Orleans, married a minister, who became a Pastor in New Orleans. She became a beautician and her home became a place for the family members to live when they moved there or was going to Charity Hospital for medical treatment. Walker Harris died around 1960, the legacy of working for US Postal System would be continued with his son, Ivory, and other family members working for the government. These were considered stable and middle income jobs.
Walker Harris' sisters neither married nor had children. He is the only sibling to continue the lineage.
