OUR HISTORY
FAMILY HISTORY OF THE COATES, HARRIS, AND YOUNG
“And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and the south: and in thee all families of the earth be blessed.” Genesis 28:14
"But rescues the poor from their distress and increases their families like vast flocks of sheep. The godly will see these things and be glad, while the wicked are stricken silent. Those who are wise will take all this to heart; they will see in our history the faithful love of the LORD." Psalm 107:41-43
For certainly our families are blessed, for our journey began many years ago in Africa, the cradle of civilization. It is unknown when the first Coates, Harris, or Young came to the shores of America but we know that the first group of African Americans came during the 17th century.
Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana has a rich history; it is located in the southern part of Louisiana, strategically bounded by Mississippi, Atchafalaya, & Lower Old Rivers.
Gwendolyn Hall, in African in Colonial Louisiana, states that 22 French slave ships arrived in Louisiana from Juda (Whjdah), Carbinda (Angola) & Senegal. In the 1785 Census of Punto Cortada & Rio Falso as Pointe Coupee & False River were called Spanish, the population totaled 1.521 residents, 482 whites, & 1035 slaves, & 4 free people of color. Indians were not counted in this census, but Indians would chase runaway slaves for the whites. Pointe Coupee’s strategic location along the Mississippi River, vast unclaimed acres, and suitable climate made it attractive to the Spanish, French, and whites. These groups had the last names' Young, Alford, Allen, Cooley, and Batchelor. In the 1850 Census non-native Pointe Coupee residents called foreign born came from Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina Ohio, Pennsylvania, France, Germany, & Scotland. In the 1860 Census Pointe Coupee was 4, 094 whites, 721 free colored and 12, 903 slaves. Pointe Coupee consists of Fordoche, Livonia, Morganza, New Roads, and settlements' areas, such as "The Spillway - Brownview."
